Talking about photograhy: Preservation or display strategy? Studies on reprinting photographic artworks by living artists

Course description

The course proposes a theoretical reflection on the transformations that contemporary photography introduces into the fields of conservation and museology, particularly in relation to the reproducibility of photographic images and the increasing diffusion of artworks offered by artists in digital format. While photography has always been characterized by a tension between uniqueness and multiplicity, more recent artistic practices—where institutions acquire digital files and the right to produce prints for exhibition—challenge long-established notions such as material authenticity, originality of the artwork, and the stability of the conserved object.

Starting from these premises, the course aims to explore the theoretical and practical implications of these changes for conservators, curators, and museum institutions through the discussion of case studies and moments of collective debate. In many cases, the deterioration of photographic prints or the disappearance of specific technologies and materials makes reproduction one of the few possible strategies to ensure the continued accessibility of the artwork within the museum context. At the same time, the progressive obsolescence of photographic technologies—both analog and digital—poses new challenges for conservation and for the possibility of recreating the original technical conditions of production over time.
