Master’s Degree in Conservation and Management of Contemporary Artworks
The FOP Master’s Degree in Conservation and Management of Contemporary Artworks is a specialized training program addressing the numerous and complex challenges posed by contemporary art from a material, formal, expressive, and interpretive standpoint. These issues are tackled through a strongly multidisciplinary yet unified methodological approach, in keeping with the tradition of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure.

Targeted at graduates in the field of cultural heritage protection and conservation, the program benefits from a dense network of national and international partners and collaborations. It includes both theoretical activities (lectures, study days, seminars) and practical experiences (educational visits, work sites, internships, workshops, and meetings with artists).
Participants will thoroughly examine the challenges of contemporary artworks, enhancing their knowledge and practical skills in art history, technical-conservation studies, and scientific research, with a focus on specific areas for in-depth exploration.
Previous Edition: Academic Year 2019–2021
The first edition of the Master’s Degree in Conservation and Management of Contemporary Artworks was launched with the aim of analyzing the complex field of contemporary art in its various forms of expression. The goal was to establish a shared methodological framework for critically addressing the issues related to conservation, management, and restoration. This included analyzing artworks from historical-artistic, museological, and technical-structural perspectives, studying diagnostics, scheduled conservation, restoration, and, lastly, the legal and managerial aspects of cultural heritage management and promotion.
The teaching staff was selected from among the most qualified Italian and international experts working in prestigious public and private institutions, with extensive experience in scientific and conservation fields. In addition to lectures and lab work, the program included visits to museums, galleries, and public and private cultural institutions across Italy, where participants engaged in hands-on activities. These included working directly on artworks in the collections or dealing with issues related to exhibition and organizational aspects.
Open to 25 graduates from various disciplines (Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage, Architecture, Art History, Cultural Heritage, Scientific Subjects Applied to Cultural Heritage, diplomas from Higher Education Schools and Academies), the Master’s program was supported by highly qualified partners renowned nationally and internationally in the field of contemporary art.
