
Dr. Marta García Celma is a senior conservator and researcher who specializes in the conservation of cultural heritage, with a particular emphasis on contemporary art and photography. She has held various positions in academia, museums, archives, libraries, and private practice in Europe and Asia, accumulating fifteen years of experience. Marta received a Marie Skłodowska-Curie ESR Fellowship and earned her PhD from Amsterdam University through the Horizon 2020 project New Approaches in the Conservation of Contemporary Art (NACCA)
García Celma’s research focuses on identifying stakeholders, assessing conservation value, and making conservation decisions, particularly highlighting contemporary perspectives on heritage preservation. Since 2019, she has held a managerial position as a senior conservator for exhibition and collection care at Hong Kong’s M+ Museum, while also engaging in photograph conservation practice.
She is a fervent advocate for international conservation perspectives and acknowledges that conservation is a profession that requires reevaluation within historical and sociocultural frameworks. Since 2022, Marta has served as the Chair of the ICON Photographic Materials Group, actively participating in international publications, conferences, lectures, and collaborative projects.
